Re-Centering During Times of Anxiety
During uncertain times it is common for many of us to feel anxiety, or fear. How do we navigate through such times as these? There are many healthy things you can do refocus yourself. Let’s start with the basics. Find a space within your home, office, or some place where you can have some privacy. Allow yourself to relax in this space. Close your eyes and just breathe. Take 5 deep breaths, with each breathe you take hold it in for 3 seconds. After you have taken your deep breathes, open your eyes. Here is how you can re-focus yourself by utilizing your senses. You will need at least 5 mins for this exercise.
Sight
What is it that you see around you? Can you describe it? Is it pleasing to the eye (hopefully so), how does it make you feel?
Now use your mind’s eye. Close your eyes, what do you see? What are the thoughts that come to the forefront of your mind?
Sound
Make a mental note of everything that you can hear in this moment. What is that you hear? How near or far away are these sounds? Does what you’re hearing make you feel anxious or relaxed?
Smell
Take in one big deep breath through your nose, what do you smell at this moment? How would you describe this smell?
Taste
With your mouth closed, move your tongue along the top of your mouth, across your teeth, and along the sides. What is it that you taste?
Touch
Take your hands and place them in your lap. Cross you left arm to your right shoulder, and cross your right arm to you left shoulder. How does it feel to embrace yourself? Allow yourself to stay within your embrace for at least 10 seconds, while breathing deeply.
The purpose of this exercise is to bring you into the present moment. Sometimes life gets overwhelming, however you are always in control, even when things feel out of control.
